PS5 PS4 RPG fans shouldn't expect The Outer Worlds 3

Beloved PS5, PS4 RPG Series Sadly on Ice for Now

A fan-favorite PS5, PS4 RPG series won’t be getting a new entry anytime soon after its latest release missed the mark. Obsidian Entertainment has told Bloomberg that there are no plans for The Outer Worlds 3 in the coming years.

Why RPG fans shouldn’t expect The Outer Worlds 3 on PS5

2019’s The Outer Worlds turned out to be a surprise hit, and its success set the stage for a sequel. Unfortunately, The Outer Worlds 2‘s development suffered from various challenges, including but not limited to the COVID pandemic, and the game ultimately wasn’t a commercial success.

According to Bloomberg, The Outer Worlds 2 was in development for more than six years, which ended up inflating its production costs and parent company Microsoft’s expectations. And those financial expectations weren’t met.

“I don’t think anybody really likes five, six, seven-year dev cycles,” said The Outer Worlds 2 director Brandon Adler. “We’ve kind of grown into that.”

Now, Obsidian says that it plans to work on projects both big and small in the coming years, but The Outer Worlds 3 isn’t part of those plans. However, the studio does plan to continue working on the Avowed universe.
