Sony shadow-dropped God of War: Sons of Sparta for PS5 last week, taking players by surprise… but not necessarily in a good way. While the game has been well-received overall, once the surprise factor wore off, a large number of players were left upset with how Sons of Sparta’s co-op mode has been handled.
God of War: Sons of Sparta advertised as a PS5 co-op game, but there’s a catch
Sons of Sparta’s PS Store page specifically mentions (at the time of this writing) that it offers “Single Player or 2 Player Couch Co-Op mode.” Many bought the game thinking that they would play with a partner, only to find out that the co-op mode is unlocked after completing the main story.
“Join young Kratos and Deimos, sons of Sparta, on a Greek odyssey as they discover the meaning of duty and honor,” the official description adds, suggesting that it’s a co-op affair from the get-go.
As pointed out by PushSquare, the inability to play co-op right away confused enough players that Santa Monica Studio had to address the situation on X.
Therein lies the problem. If Sony is having to clarify this on social media, Sons of Sparta’s PS Store description is most certainly misleading. And quite a few players do feel that way:
While I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a co-op mode that unlocks after beating the story, Sons of Sparta’s PS Store description could have been better, especially considering the co-op mode wasn’t kept as a surprise and is mentioned in the listing.
