New PS5 Sci-Fi Game Gets Strong Reviews Ahead of This Week’s Release

A big PS5 sci-fi game is out this week, and ahead of its release, the upcoming game has gotten a ton of strong reviews.

What PS5 sci-fi game is getting strong reviews?

Supermassive Games’ upcoming sci-fi title Directive 8020, starring Lashana Lynch as an astronaut trying to survive a shapeshifting alien threat, is set to release tomorrow, on May 12, 2026. Ahead of its release, the game debuted on OpenCritic with a 76 score, with 62% of critics recommending the title. Despite the seemingly mixed score, Directive 8020 has largely been praised for its setting, atmosphere, and story.

IGN’s Leana Hafer praised the game, calling it a “step forward for The Dark Pictures Anthology in terms of spectacle and storytelling, making it a chilling and impressive start to the second season of the series.” PC Gamer’s Elie Gould said the game was “everything you could want from a sci-fi horror game: Body horror aliens, the unwavering dread that all of us are insignificant when set against the great expanse of the universe, and fun QTEs.”

DualShockers’ Christian Bognar also had praise for the game, noting it’s “a good addition to the Dark Pictures anthology and a solid start to its second season. Its story ranks among Supermassive Games’ best work, marking a much-needed step forward for a studio that has struggled to release standout titles in recent years.”

PlayStation Lifestyle’s Tyler Treese also loved the game, calling it “a nice departure from Supermassive’s previous titles. With smoother gameplay and some genuine chills, the extra time in development has definitely helped it.”
