PlayStation Discs Coming to an End, Sony Confirms

In news that’s set to shock many, Sony Interactive Entertainment has just announced that it will no longer produce PlayStation discs starting in January 2028. The company, which historically supported physical media, cited “shifting trends in consumer preference.”

What the discontinuation of PlayStation discs means for PS6

“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,” Sony wrote. “Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”

It has long been rumored that PS6 will launch without a disc drive, but given this news, we’re guessing that there won’t be any next-gen disc drives at all. If that happens, it’s unclear what will become of PS5 discs that players own.
