Sony has sneaked in a small change to the PS5 console’s retail box, which is already upsetting players who’ve realized what it means. Dashing all hopes, the company has confirmed that it will not change its decision to end video game disc production despite the backlash.
New PS5 console box warns buyers about impending cessation of disc production
As spotted by X user Behind the Games, PS5 consoles are now being shipped in boxes that carry a label warning buyers that starting January 2028, PlayStation games will not be available on disc.
“IMPORTANT NOTICE: Starting in January 2028, new PlayStation game releases will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and through retailers exclusively in digital format,” the notice reads. “Game discs released before January 2028 will continue to be compatible with this console.”
As expected and as noted in the tweet above, Sony had been planning this move for years due to dwindling physical sales. I must admit that the numbers aren’t looking good for discs, as all major publishers have confirmed that a vast majority of their game sales are digital.
The question now revolves around Sony’s plans for existing PS5 discs when the PS6 is launched. We’ll find out in due course.
