PS5 Pro’s ‘Enhance PSSR’ Toggle Won’t Be Updated Over Time

PlayStation architect Mark Cerny has confirmed that PS5 Pro‘s new “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” toggle won’t be updated over time to the most recent version of Sony’s upscaler. Cerny confirmed the news in an interview with Digital Foundry, during which he also revealed that nearly a dozen games received backend developer updates to replace existing PSSR with PSSR 2.0.

Why PS5 Pro’s new ‘Enhance PSSR’ toggle will remain fixed

Cerny’s interview with Digital Foundry is currently paywalled on Patreon, but thanks to Reddit user DreamCorridor, we have access to some snippets.

Those who’ve kept up with PS5 Pro updates or owned the console since launch will know that Sony makes backend tweaks to the PSSR upscaler, revising it along the way. When Digital Foundry asked Cerny if the new “Enhance PSSR” feature would also be updated to reflect the revisions, the executive said that the toggle would remain fixed.

“The current strategy is that it will be fixed, i.e., even if there are updated network parameters for the most recent PS5 Pro games, those parameters will not be applied when the Enhance feature is used,” Cerny said. “That allows the PS5 Pro community to provide clear guidance on how and when to use the Enhance feature – conversely, if the parameters were continually being updated, then that guidance would be much harder to provide.”

This means players won’t need to keep the toggle on by default, and it will need to be used on a case-by-case basis.

Cerny confirmed that the list of games supporting PSSR 2.0 that was shared in a recent PS Blog post includes titles that were voluntarily patched by their developers before the recent system update. As a result, they are already running PSSR 2.0.

Games that are specifically patched will have the updated upscaler, but those that aren’t will benefit from “Enhance PSSR.”

Cerny added that patching games can be “a fairly tedious process,” so it’s all at developers’ discretion.
