PlayStation 5 Owners Get Free Live TV Support, But There’s a Catch

A new update for the PlayStation 5 allows users to enjoy free live TV. The service launched on August 31, 2026, for PS5 players in the U.S. However, the service comes with a major catch.

Sony Pictures Television officially launched Live TV on PS5. However, the service comes with ads and is exclusive to U.S. Players can access the service from the Media tab by selecting the Live TV on PS5 icon and signing in with their PlayStation account.

Gamers can enjoy more than 100 live channels and a growing selection of on-demand entertainment directly on their PS5, without downloading third-party apps. The lineup includes news, sports, movies, TV shows, anime, and more. The lineup includes content from Amazon MGM Studios, Crunchyroll, FOX, NBCUniversal, NFL Channel, UFC, and more.

This library will grow on the PlayStation over time. The service is currently available only in the U.S., with Sony also looking to expand it to Canada.

Why advertisers are paying attention to PlayStation 5

PS5 users have long used their consoles to stream content. They have done so through streaming apps available on their consoles. This has also made the PS5 an increasingly important platform for advertisers looking to reach consumers through connected TV.

As per Variety, Sony executives have been trying to find ways to blend the company’s assets together so that advertisers can reach the desired consumers.

Peter Wood, executive vice president of consumer platforms and services at Sony Pictures Entertainment, said, “Sony engages with tens of millions of customers around the world across our devices. I don’t think it’s rocket science to look at trying to remove the friction of content discovery across different media.”

Moreover, Wood added that the advertisements served to PlayStation users would be meaningful. He added, “We are just being very thoughtful about ensuring the advertising presented is relevant.”

Publica and PubMatic will work with Sony on advertising for PS5 consoles. The two companies specialize in connected TV advertising and will help deliver relevant ads to PS5 users.
