Capcom’s New PlayStation 5 Action-Adventure Game Gets Strong Reviews

A new PlayStation 5 action-adventure game from Capcom has earned rave reviews ahead of its debut. Notably, it’s the first installment in a classic franchise in over two decades.

Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword has managed to steal critics’ attention and praise ahead of its awaited release this week.

Being a reboot, Onimusha: Way of the Sword arrives 20 years after 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. The new entry is set in the historic Japanese capital of Edo-era Kyoto.

Players control the main character of Miyamoto Musashi, who wields the Oni Gauntlet. The main story sees him fighting against the monstrosities from the underworld known as Genma.

Robert Ramsey of Push Square admired the game’s swordplay and called it a “modern Capcom masterpiece. Its combat is clearly the main draw and it’s a superb system once it gets rolling. The boss fights in particular are some of the best you’ll find on PS5.”

Cesar Salcedo of GamerFocus admired the “depth of its combat system” and the “spectacular nature of its boss fights” and wrote that it manages to “adapt the franchise to modern standards without losing its identity or its dark fantasy atmosphere.”

Sam Aberdeen of Nexus Hub wrote that Way of the Sword puts Capcom at the top of its game with “thrilling combat, boss fight spectacles, and a charismatic, endearing protagonist in Musashi.”

Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, alongside Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
