Sony Exec Suggests PS4 Announcement In May

The vice president of Home Entertainment at Sony, Hiroshi Sakamoto, has let slip when Sony could end up revealing the PlayStation 4.

In an interview with Chilean news site El Mercurio On-Line, he was asked about the next generation of Sony consoles, and replied (translated):

That’s still a big secret, but our friends at Sony PlayStation are getting prepared. For now, I can only say that we’re focused in the gaming event E3, set for this June. This announcement may be then, or possibly earlier in May.

…we expect [Sony] to deliver great news, but we must wait until May at least.

As Sakamoto doesn’t work for SCE PlayStation, his comments should be taken with a grain of salt, but it’s probably because he doesn’t work for that department, he was less careful over what he said. His role as VP of Home Entertainment is also rather high up, and covers Blu-ray players, so he should have some idea about the PlayStation department’s plans.

If a May announcement is in the works, Sony will have to invite the press relatively soon, meaning that news of the event is sure to leak in the coming months. Of course, like Sakamoto says, an E3 announcement is equally likely.

Either way, one thing is for sure – it’s not being announced in February, despite what the press tell you.
