PS4 Sales Cross 22.3 Million Worldwide, Sony’s Financial Report Reveals

After announcing PlayStation 4 sales of more than 20.2 million as of March 1, 2015, Sony’s latest financial report for the year ending March 31, 2015 has revealed that PS4 consoles sales now total over 22.3 million worldwide.

Sony shifted 14.8 million PS4s during the latest fiscal year, and looking ahead to this fiscal year, they are planning to sell 16 million PS4s.

As for Sony’s other platforms, things weren’t as positive, with PlayStation 3 sales at 3.1 million for the entire fiscal year (down from 7.1 million in the previous FY). Meanwhile, combined sales for the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation TV were 3.3 million (down from 4.1 million).

Elsewhere, Software sales saw a huge jump to 460 billion yen (up from 384 billion yen), while Network sales were at 351 billion yen (up from 200 billion yen).

All in all, Sony’s gaming division is now the company’s biggest earner, with sales up 33% to $11.5 billion. As the report explains:

This significant increase was primarily due to an increase in PS4 hardware unit sales, a significant increase in network services revenue, the impact of foreign exchange rates and an increase in PS4 software sales, partially offset by a decrease in PlayStation 3 (“PS3”) hardware and PS3 software sales.

Operating income of 48.1 billion yen (401 million U.S. dollars) was recorded, compared to an operating loss of 18.8 billion yen in the previous fiscal year. This significant improvement was primarily due to the impact of the above-mentioned increase in sales, partially offset by the impact of the decrease in PS3 software sales, the unfavorable impact of the appreciation of the U.S. dollar reflecting the high ratio of U.S. dollar-denominated costs, as well as the recording of an 11.2 billion yen (93 million U.S dollars) write-down of PS Vita and PS TV components in the current fiscal year. In the previous fiscal year, a 6.2 billion yen write-off of certain PC software titles was recorded.

Do you think the PS4 will sell 16 million units this year and bring its lifetime total to over 38 million by March 2016?
