Now available on PlayStation 4 (in North America; Europe and Japan get it on June 13), Xbox One, and PC, the Battleborn Free Trial gives you “unlimited access to all competitive multiplayer gameplay modes and maps, without any time limits, level caps or planned end date,” 2K and Gearbox announced today.
The full competitive multiplayer experience isn’t available in the Free Trial though, as you’ll only have access to a “rotating roster of six free playable heroes, which include the same character and account progression found in the full game.”
If you want to unlock more Battleborn content, Gearbox says you can use Credits earned in-game or Platinum currency purchased with real money to unlock Heroes, Story Operations, and everything else you see below individually:
- Battleborn Heroes
- Cosmetics skins and taunts
- Gear packs
- XP and Loot Boosters
- Additional Loadouts and Bank pages
- Story Operations, individually or as part of the Season Pass bundle
- Battle Passes to access private matches
If you decide to purchase the full Battleborn game from digital or retail stores, you’ll unlock all 25 base Heroes, all eight Story Mode missions and the Prologue, and permanent access to private matches. Additionally, any player who goes from the Free Trial to the full game will “receive in-game credits for any duplicated content that was purchased a la carte,” character challenges and masteries will carry over, and you’ll be granted access to earn the character masteries that are only available through Story Mode missions.
You can learn much more about the Battleborn Free Trial in the official FAQ.
On Twitter, Gearbox President Randy Pitchford talked about how Battleborn isn’t free-to-play and there’s been over three million users:
Over 3m users = skipped? Okay.

Try to find it on 1st party dashboards under F2P. Oh, you can’t? But there’s a demo/trial option that’s free? I see now – demo/trial != F2P.
— Randy Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) June 6, 2017
Trial can be either a subset of content or a limitation on content, which is what we have here. F2P is a ground up business model.
— Randy Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) June 6, 2017
False. I actually tried to get 1st parties to also list it under F2P, but they refused. Official classification is as a trial/demo.

I would like to see it exist as F2P, but that’s not where we are. Business model is retail with DLC and that’s the truth and the way it is.
