Crytek Believes Free Demos Don’t Have a Future

Crytek are the subject of controversy as of late, with many members of the Crysis 2 team speaking strongly about other games. The company have spoken yet again, and this time it won’t please those who enjoy free demos.

During an interview with Develop, Crytek boss Cevat Yerli said that free demos for games don’t hold a bright future as fewer and fewer games receive demos. When talking about Crysis 2 receiving a demo, Yerli said:

That’s something we need to think about, because we haven’t fully decided on this yetBut whether we do have a demo or not, do I think companies need to release so many demos? I think that we’ll see more and more games not carrying a demo in the future, because it becomes prohibitively expensive.

Also, given the time pressures in making a demo – in fact given the time pressure of making a quality demo – I think it all becomes really difficult to work with, and I think we’ll see less and less of them in the future.

Crytek have also recently criticized Modern Warfare 2, stated that Mass Effect 2 is better for the industry than Uncharted 2 and declared the PlayStation 3 a more powerful console than the Xbox 360.
