PixelJunk Shooter 2 E3 Impressions

The PixelJunk team is back with the next installment to the PixelJunk series. PixelJunk Shooter 2 will feature new hazards, locations, and fluids to play with. I got some hands on with one of the levels, and found out that the PixelJunk team definitely listens to their fans.

The level would feel similar to anyone who played the first shooter game. Each level is broken up into several smaller stages. Collect (or kill) all the trapped men in a level to open the gates to the next level. Baddies will pop up and try and shoot you down throughout the different stages. The diamonds will also return will plenty of them scattered in all the nooks and crannies for you to find.

There were plenty of new additions to PixelJunk Shooter 2. First of all, the walls were bright purple and spongy. Flying into any part of the wall will cause you ship to be bounced back. The level was also filled with a lot of purple acid. Acid is one of the new fluids you get to play with in PixelJunk Shooter 2. If it gets on your ship, it will slowly heat your ship until you can find some water to wash it off.

Some of the stages required me to swim through a pool of acid as I entered the stage, so it became a race to find a pool of water before my ship was destroyed. Although I didn’t see them ourselves, we were told there will be levels that are completely dark. You will have to manipulate light sources so that you could make your way through the stage. PixelJunk Shooter 2 will also be longer than the first, apparently because the fans demanded it.

The online features have also received an update. Now you can load a “ghost” of another player into any level. This is essentially a copy of another player’s run through the level. You can use this to try and beat the player’s score and upload your score online. There will also be online competitive gameplay which will include voice chatting.

Playing through PixelJunk Shooter 2 felt exactly like playing through the first game – one hell of a good time. With developers teasing the eventual unveiling of new fluids and levels, we can’t wait to get our hands on more of the game.
