Crystal Dynamics on Why They’re Rebooting Tomb Raider

Crystal Dynamics has said the reboot of Tomb Raider is the only option left due to the developer having “done all that we could” with the older installments in the IP.

Speaking to VG247, art director Brian Horton stressed it was the right time for a new direction for Sqaure Enix’s franchise following the launch of 2008’s Tomb Raider: Underworld:

We’d done all that we could do with that version of Tomb Raider and we needed to think about Lara in a fresh way. We wanted to keep the same tenants of an action-adventure game but put them through a new filter and so the origin story bubbled up from that.

By having a period of incubation, we’ve been able to revitalise not only the tone and mood of the game, but also the mechanics and the way the game plays in order to make it more relevant for today’s gamer.

Tomb Raider is currently scheduled for a delayed release on March 5th 2013.
