January 2013 NPD: Leap Week Sees the Industy Climb 9%, DmC Places 6th (Update: Ni no Kuni Placed 11th)

Update: IGN has reported that Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch finished in 11th place and would have finished 7th if individual game sales weren’t combined across all platforms.

Original Story: The first month of what could be a very big 2013, January, started the year off right. As reported by the NPD, total industry sales were up 9% year over year at $834.7 million, hardware sales climbed 4% to $205 million, accessories rocketed up 30% to $256.6 million, and software stayed about even at $373.1 million.

With January representing a longer five week sales period due to a ‘Leap Week’ though, the NPD said that if January sales were normalized for a typical month, overall sales would have been down 13%, software sales down 19%, and accessories up 4%.

Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the #1 selling game last month, with newcomers DmC Devil May Cry finishing in 6th and Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch placing outside of the top 10:
