Defiance Developer Trion Worlds Hit With Layoffs, Future Titles Apparently “Unaffected”

Trion Worlds shipped their buy-to-play MMO, Defiance, back in April and, while they seem to be working on it every single day to improve the experience, IGN reports that the developer has suffered some pretty harsh layoffs, though Trion Worlds has confirmed that they weren’t as high as the originally-thought 80%.

Trion Worlds said that that these layoffs were “to best position Trion in a rapidly changing industry.” They then went on to add that Defiance has more than one million registered players, and, as they move on from the launch of the game, they’re adjusting their “staffing levels to deliver new content and improved features.”

Future titles are said to be “unaffected by these changes,” so if you’re eagerly anticipating that free-to-play version of RIFT, it’s still on track.

Are you surprised to hear about these layoffs, considering that Defiance finished 5th in April sales? Let us know in the comments below.
