One Monthly Game Release Isn’t Good For New Systems; Japanese Vita Sales Tanking

When you’ve only got one new game coming over the course of a month, it had better be big. And “big” should ideally not just be in a relative sense. Take, for example, the debut of Valhalla Knights 3. It’s the Vita’s only new game this month in Japan, and it debuted to some 40,000 sales. Compared to the earlier installments of the series, that’s fine and dandy, but for the only game on a new platform that is struggling to gain a foothold, that’s a miss.

Here are the 20 best-sellers in Japan for the week ending May 26th, according to Media Create:

1. Shin Megami Tensei IV – 3DS (188,562)

2. Kamen Rider Battride War – PS3 (128,659)

3. Biohazard Revelations – PS3 (102,673)

4. Friend Collection – 3DS (59,876)

5. Valhalla Knights 3 – PSV (40,357)

6. Terraria – PS3 (19,861)

7. Luigi’s Mansion 2 – 3DS (19,079)

8. Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 3DS (15,489)

9. Summon Night 5 – PSP (13,624)

10. Biohazard Revelations – WIU (8,398)

11. Biohazard Revelations – 360 (7,053)

12. Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen – PS3 (5,334)

13. Taiko Drum Master Super Deluxe Edition – Wii (5,190)

14. Z/X: Zillions of Enemy – PS3 (5,019)

15. Dragon Ball Heroes – 3DS (4,105)

16. Tamagochi: Still Popular Here – 3DS (3,961)

17. New Super Mario Bros. 2 – 3DS (3,517)

18. MuvLuv Alternative: Total Eclipse – PS3 (3,138)

19. Mario Kart 7 – 3DS (3,045)

20. Monster Hunter Tri-G – 3DS (2,612)

Three months ago, everyone was making fun of Vita for only selling around 10,000 units per week. Sony decided to drop the price, and that move, combined with a flood of software, gave the machine a great March and April. Now, however, we’ve just seen three straight weeks with the Vita unable to clear even 13,000 units. Wii-U finds itself in the earlier chapters of a similar story.

3DS – 54,710

PS3 – 13,318

PSV – 12,171

PSP – 5,749

WIU – 5,648

WII – 1,192

360 – 382

Hopefully it at least stays above 10k until Dragon’s Crown and Toukiden come out. But even then, I’m starting to worry about the impact they’ll have. One machine can only have so many fake saviors. Your thoughts?
