Failing to offer up an explanation as to why this is happening, Rockstar announced on their website and forums that Grand Theft Auto Online will be undergoing maintenance later today, which could last up to 24 hours:
Grand Theft Auto Online will be down for maintenance beginning tonight at 9PM Eastern Time [6PM Pacific Time] through tomorrow, Thursday January 16th. We expect to be back up within 24 hours. Apologies for the inconvenience.
Since Rockstar hasn’t given out an official reason for the maintenance, you’re free to speculate (could it be to add features, stop hackers/cheaters, fix issues, or something else?) on why exactly such an extended period of downtime is taking place today/tomorrow.
