Take-Two: Battleborn Under-Performed, But Gearbox Remains Committed to DLC

Battleborn may go down as a commercial flop, but publisher 2K and Gearbox Software remain committed to the online shooter going forward.

Word comes by way of the company’s first quarter earnings report — as relayed by GamesIndustry.biz — where Take-Two Interactive President Strauss Zelnick conceded that although “[Battleborn] launched to solid reviews, its performance in the market has been below our expectations.”

Zelnick then went on to throw his support behind the MOBA-esque shooter, before confirming that additional DLC and the virtual currency are still headed to Gearbox’s new IP.

“We think there remains an opportunity to grow the audience for this unique experience over time, and 2K will continue to drive engagement and recurrent consumer spending on the title through add-on content and virtual currency. We’re being very frank about where we are, because we’re a transparent company. We’re still delivering new content to Battleborn. Audiences love Battleborn. We still have virtual currency coming for Battleborn. We’re not counting it out for a minute. We’re just telling you where we’re at now.”

These efforts have taken the form of an extensive DLC plan that was mapped out last month, not to mention the release of Battleborn‘s “cold-blooded killer” Pendles.

Time will tell whether Take-Two’s renewed effort to retain a core Battleborn audience makes a tangible impact.
