Publisher Enhance Games teased a bit of the content they are preparing for Rez Infinite, such as the mysterious Area X they tossed in their debut trailer for the game. Now they’re ready to talk about it as they posted on the PlayStation Blog. So if you’re wondering what is Area X, they even have a hard time describing it.
Hopefully, if we’ve done our job right, Area X is something that’s hard to put into words…but let me try:
Area X is a new level we’ve added just for Rez Infinite.
Area X is an experiment.
Area X is Rez, but it’s also not Rez… it’s something new.
Like classic Rez, Area X is a designed to be a focused, replayable experience, that uses simple shooting mechanics as a means to induce “synesthesia,” an effect where perceiving something with one sense triggers another sense – like you can “see sounds,” or “hear colors” (as pioneered by influential Russian artist and art theorist Wassily Kandinsky).
Does that make it clear as mud? President and CEO of Enhance Games, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, explained that Area X is best seen and heard to understand it, which can be done in the reveal trailer above.
Mizughuchi went on to say that with Rez Infinite, they wanted to create something that induced the same excitement that Rez originally did, but also make it feel like it’s its own game, its own unique property that is at the same time, not Rez.
We’ll find out how well they do on October 13, 2016 when Rez Infinite along with Area X releases on PS4 and PSVR.
