Director Guillermo del Toro Is Not Involved Creatively in Death Stranding

With Death Stranding’s latest trailer showcasing Mads Mikkelsen (Dr. Strange, Hannibal) and a surprise cameo by director Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim, Pan’s Labyrinth) , one might assume that del Toro and Kojima are working together in crafting the upcoming horror game due to their history together.

It seems, del Toro’s involvement this time around is purely as a character in the game and nothing more. In a phone interview with IGN, del Toro confirmed this and said he’s not involved in the creative process “at all.”

Guillermo del Toro: I’m involved as a character. Kojima-san called me and said, ‘I want you to be a character in the game,’ and I said, ‘Gladly.’ He’s discussed his ideas so I could understand the character, but other than that I’m not involved, creatively, at all.”

This is entirely Kojima-san’s game. I think it’s gonna be a fantastic game, 100%. But this is him and his ideas. I’m just a puppet in his hands. My contribution is limited to being a cheerleader for his ideas and being scanned for long hours at a time. That’s about it.

Given how much support del Toro has shown to legendary game designer Hideo Kojima, it’s not surprising to see his involvement at all. However, it is a little surprising that Kojima hasn’t tapped del Toro’s vivid imagination to help craft Death Stranding’s world.

With Kojima confirming that development on Death Stranding will go into “full swing” this year, who knows, though? Would you want del Toro to help Kojima with Death Stranding’s story or execution? Or would you rather that the game be a Kojima project through and through?
