It’s safe to say now that Capcom’s new take on the Resident Evil franchise with Resident Evil 7 biohazard has paid off given how both players and critics seem to like this first-person direction.
Having said that, it’s understandable if not everyone is a fan of the franchise going first-person. In this week’s Now Loading, the staff weighs in whether Resident Evil should continue down this road or whether it should go back to its over-the-shoulder gameplay, or even to its clunky roots.
What’s your take? Do you want Resident Evil 8 to be first-person and have the same setting as RE7? Or should the gameplay be more like Resident Evil 4? Let us know what you think in the comments.
Now Loading is a recurring staff-driven feature where PlayStation LifeStyle discusses anything video game-related under the sun (yes, even non-Sony platforms.

I haven't had a chance to play it yet. However, it sounds like the series has a future on PSVR if the hardware install base continues to grow.

I want more of what I just played. More first person. More VR.

Can't we have the best of both worlds? Resident Evil 7 in first person is truly great, and a really exciting glimpse at how AAA horror can flourish in VR. It's far from perfect -- screen tearing and the dip in fidelity is a little jarring -- but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jumping/cursing at every corner while hooked up to PSVR.RE7 in first person feels right in this moment. Capcom has delivered an intense, old-school horror experience to essentially course-correct the series, but going forward I'd love to see a third-person release that is more RE4 than RE6. -

I think there's a balance here that Capcom can try out. Maybe have another Resident Evil be in the same vein as RE7, but then have a spin-off of sorts that dives back into the old RE gameplay? Not RE6, but more RE4.
Having said that, I'm really happy Capcom managed to successfully reboot the franchise. When I first heard of the franchise going first-person (before it was revealed), I was in shock -- and not in a good way. Really glad I was wrong. -

I loved Amnesia, Outlast and the P.T. demo, which all delivered truly terrifying experiences, enhanced by their first-person presentation. Resident Evil 7 also shines because of this, and I'd love to see more of the same from Resident Evil 8 and beyond.
