Famitsu has released the list of Japan’s top 100 best-selling games, so far, in 2018. Game Data Library published the list and the numbers are intriguing. Rounding out the top ten are a total of seven Nintendo Switch titles, which is of little surprise given the hardware’s worldwide success. The number one spot, however, goes to Monster Hunter: World on PlayStation 4, which has sold over 1.9 million units as of June 24, 2018 in Japan.
Interestingly, five of 2018’s top ten best-sellers launched in 2017. These five include: Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and 3DS’ Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon.

Freedom Wars
Vita owners looking to scratch the Monster Hunter itch should definitely check out Freedom Wars. The SCE Japan developed game is the rare Vita exclusive with AAA production values, and it's also one of the best action titles on the system. You'll be fulfilling mission objectives to reduce your prison sentence which is only 1,000,000 years. Yeah, needless to say you'll be working off your debt to society for quite some time.
-
Mercenary Kings
One of the most unique titles on this list is Tribute Games' Mercenary Kings. The 2D PlayStation 4 title mixes Contra-style action with Monster Hunter trappings. You'll chase bosses into different areas of a map, complete dozens of missions, and you'll keep coming back for more satisfying gunplay.
-
God Eater Resurrection
A remake of the original God Eater game, God Eater Resurrection released on PS4 and Vita in late 2015 over in Japan. Thankfully, North American and European fans will get to enjoy the title later this year as Bandai Namco is bringing it over.
-
Lord of Apocalypse
Lord of Apocalypse is the worst game on this list, and really should only be imported if you've exhausted all other Vita games on here. The Access Games developed action RPG isn't anything special, which is disappointing as it was directed by the great Hidetaka Suehiro. Even Swery65's swagger couldn't save this game, and the lacking quality is one of the reasons why Square Enix left it in Japan.
-
Phantasy Star Nova
You'll have to import Phantasy Star Nova, but the Tri-Ace developed title is relatively import friendly. You'll get the same thrill of battling giant foes in Monster Hunter in Nova, and the epic battles make this Vita action RPG stick out from the crowd.
-
Soul Sacrifice Delta
The upgraded version of Soul Sacrifice adds even more to an already solid package. The combat has a lot of depth in Soul Sacrifice Delta, and it's one of the best Monster Hunter alternatives on Vita. It's one of Keiji Inafune's true triumphs as a designer, and one that actually released.
-
Toukiden: Kiwami
An enhanced version of Toukiden, Toukiden: Kiwami includes twice the amount of demons of the original. It also brought the Vita hit to PlayStation 4. That makes it one of the PS4's best Monster Hunter alternatives, and it's altogether a really solid outing for Omega Force.
-
God Eater 2: Rage Burst
God Eater 2 originally released on Vita in 2013, but only in Japan. Now an enhanced version, God Eater 2: Rage Burst, will find its way to North American shores later this year. It's also coming to PS4, which is exciting as the system doesn't have a surplus of hunting titles.
-
Ragnarok Odyssey ACE
Not only is Ragnarok Odyssey ACE an upgraded version of Game Arts' fantastic hunting game, it's also a great introduction to the genre. The PS3 and Vita title features a great blend of accessible gameplay with all the collecting that Monster Hunter fans love. The combat might not have the same level of depth, but it's too fun to get bent out of shape over.
-
Toukiden 2
Toukiden 2 is coming out later this year for PS3, PS4 and Vita. We don't have a ton of information on it, but we're excited to play it since the first game was a surprisingly fun time.
