George Mawle, Gameplay Engineer Behind God of War’s Leviathan Axe, Has Passed Away

It is with great regret that we share the news of George Mawle’s passing with our readers. Mawle, a former Santa Monica Studio developer most known for his work on God of War‘s (2018) Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos, passed away on September 2nd.

Mawle’s demise was announced over the weekend by his colleagues. A cause of death is not known. Mawle hailed from the United Kingdom and spent seven years at Santa Monica Studio before resigning in February 2021 to work on an unannounced project. He previously worked for Radical Entertainment and lent his talents to games like Prototype.

Over on Twitter, Santa Monica Studio’s Mihir Sheth tweeted:

Like many others throughout his 20+ year career in game development, I sat next to or near George everyday for over five years, have worked with him through thick and thin, and have been hit hard by the shocking news. He left Sony Santa Monica many months ago, but his jovial & very English voice and spirit had filled the studio since his joining in late 2013. During his time with us he won the hearts of the design team by sharing a passion for ‘the new’ and pushing what was possible.

At SMS he worked on Kratos’ weaponry, navigation, RPG systems, a myriad of combat behaviors, improvements to the scripting system to empower designers, and SO much more. He was a veteran on the team who played a huge role in closing out the game and squashing bugs.

There’s much more I can say, as I’m sure is the case with many other people he’s worked with. I’d welcome others to share in the comments. Games are made by people, and we all lost a great one on Thursday. We’ll miss you big guy.

Rest in peace, George.
