Rumor: Wumpa Piñata Teases a Crash Bandicoot PlayStation Showcase Announcement, ‘Wumpa League’ Tease

Editor’s Note: PlayStation LifeStyle also received this Crash Bandicoot 25th Anniversary package with the Wumpa Piñata today.

Popular French streamer Newtiteuf has received a special Crash Bandicoot 25th Anniversary package that includes a Wumpa Piñata, a day before the series’ anniversary on September 9, 2021. Coupled with the fact that the game’s 25th anniversary also falls on the same day as the upcoming PlayStation Showcase event, fans are speculating that a new game release or remastered collection may be just around the corner.

Notably, Activision has pulled similar stunts before. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy, for example, was teased through a mysterious purple egg sent to IGN and other outlets. Just a few days later, the game was officially announced with a reveal trailer. Our own Editor-in-Chief Chandler Wood also received a similar pair of large fuzzy dice as a teaser for Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, which Beenox later revealed at The Game Awards back in 2018.

Adding fuel to the fire, Activision president Rob Kostich has previously suggested that more remasters and possibly even new titles could be on the horizon, despite it appearing that most Activision studios are tied up in Call of Duty right now. Chief among the possible announcements is the rumored Wumpa League, which was teased by the official Crash Bandicoot Twitter account late last year. In the video below, you can see a sign in the background that says “Wumpa League.” Unfortunately, not much is known about the game aside from past leaks mentioning that it may be a PVP game of some sort.

The “Wumpa League” tease can also be found in a postcard that came with the package. Officially, the package is simply a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Crash, but the included postcard has the line “Crash…has even met some friends who were way out of his league.” The rest of the postcard is about celebrating by eating Crash’s favorite snack, a Wumpa fruit.  Simple celebration, or clever tease?

Though only one streamer has seemed to receive the package at this point, (See note above. PlayStation LifeStyle has received the same package as well) it’s important to consider that there was a four-day weekend in the United States due to Labor Day on September 6, 2021, which may have delayed shipments. Furthermore, due to ongoing investigations at Activision Blizzard concerning allegations of workplace abuse and sexual harassment, it could also be a conscious effort from other influencers to not signal boost or advertise the company’s products. It could even be that they are under express instructions not to reveal any details about the package until a specified date (Editor’s Note: We did not receive any instructions or embargoes not to share that we had received the package).

For now, it looks as though we’ll have to wait until the PlayStation Showcase to see, but that’s not too far away now.
