Marvel's Wolverine

PlayStation Showcase: Marvel’s Wolverine is a PS5 Exclusive in Development at Insomniac Games, Teaser Shown

Insomniac is making a Wolverine game for PS5. Today’s PlayStation Showcase revealed a very brief teaser for the next superhero title from the PlayStation Studios developer. Marvel’s Wolverine. Check out the cinematic teaser trailer below, which shows a ruined bar, one last thug on his fight, and Wolverine taking out his claws for one more takedown.

The end of the trailer says “In development for PS5, and a tweet from Insomniac confirms that it is a PS5 exclusive. The trailer didn’t end with a date, but a later trailer for Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac confirmed that sequel for 2023, so it seems like Wolverine probably won’t be ready until after Peter Parker and Miles Morales’ next adventure is out. I’d guess this is a 2023 game at the earliest, but possibly even later, given we only got a brief cinematic teaser.

Insomniac has been on a roll with the PS5, already launching two new games, a remaster of a PS4 game, and now announcing two more new games. In the first few years of the PS5’s life, they will have launched Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Marvel’s Wolverine. The studio is also being entrusted with Marvel properties thanks to its success with the Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, making this new Wolverine game possible.

Right now, Marvel’s Wolverine doesn’t have a release date, or even a window—Insomniac says it is in “very early development”—but it’s a PS5 exclusive whenever it does release.

If you missed the PlayStation Showcase, you can watch the 40 minute presentation again here. We’ll also have a full recap of every announcement from the show.

What do you hope to see Insomniac do with the Wolverine property? Do you think it will involve the X-Men in a major way, or will this focus on a Wolverine solo story? Let us know in the comments.
