ghost of tsushima director's cut

Ghost of Tsushima and PS5 Dominated U.S. Sales Charts in August 2021, According to NPD

Thanks to the release of its Director’s Cut, Ghost of Tsushima climbed to the top of August 2021 sales charts in the United States, settling for the second position, according to data shared by NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella.

It was a good month for Sony both in terms of hardware sales and software sales. On the hardware front, PS5 continues to lead the U.S. market in dollar sales. Ten months on, it remains the fastest-selling PlayStation platform in history, being a dollar sales market leader both in August and year to date.

On the software side, Ghost of Tsushima wasn’t the only Sony-published title that made it into the top charts. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales rounded up the top five, beating numerous high-profile multiplatform titles, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart sat just outside the top ten. The Last of Us Part II also jumped up once again following a sales promotion.

Overall, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War remains the best-selling game year to date, followed by MLB: The Show 2021. Resident Evil Village, Madden NFL 22, and Super Mario 3D World rounded up the top five.

Notably absent in the sales charts is Double Fine’s Psychonauts 2, thanks in part to the game’s release on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft does not provide digital data to NPD.

Consumer spending last month grew seven percent year-on-year, setting an August record of $4.4 billion across hardware, software, and accessories. Speaking of the latter, PS5’s white DualSense remains the best-selling accessory year to date. But in August, specifically, Xbox’s Elite Series 2 controller was the best-selling accessory.
