Gran Turismo 7’s Campaign Requires an Internet Connection to Prevent Save Data Modification

Polyphony Digital has confirmed that Gran Turismo 7 will require a constant internet connection to prevent players from modifying save data and cheating. The only mode that doesn’t require an internet connection is the arcade mode because it doesn’t impact save data.

“The requirement for the online connection isn’t specific to the Cafe per se – it’s just to prevent cheating overall from people trying to modify the save data, so that’s the reason for the online connection,” creator Kazunori Yamauchi told Eurogamer during an interview. “The online connection is required for the campaign mode. The only part of the game that doesn’t require an online connection is the arcade mode because that has no effect on the save data, so that’s possible. But anything that has to do with the save data requires a connection. For example things like the livery data as well – that’s something that is downloaded from the online server.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Yamauchi confirmed that Gran Turismo 7‘s time and weather will move in real time, and changes in weather will impact car physics. Additionally, the game’s weather system is actually a simulation, with impact on track surface temperature.

As an example, when a car goes over water in the rain, the tires will spray the water aside, making racing lines dry faster than the rest of the track. “That’s something that is simulated and does affect the grip of the course accordingly as time goes on, and the track begins to dry in different places,” Yamauchi explained. “The air temperature, the humidity, and then the road surface temperature will also be affected by these weather changes as well.”

Gran Turismo 7 will release on March 4, 2022.
