The NPD Group has reported that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was one of 2021’s top ten best-selling games in the United States. Considering Miles Morales is a standalone expansion rather than a full-fledged game, this is quite an achievement for Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Miles Morales beat the likes of Mario Kart 8 and Resident Evil Village to claim the sixth spot in the chart.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales sales have been impressive
Spider-Man: Miles Morales seems to be the game of choice that players pick up when purchasing a PlayStation 5. Although it’s also available on the PS4, most of its sales have come from the next-gen console where it has consistently ranked in the top charts month after month. It’s no surprise then that Miles Morales was one of the best-selling games in the U.S. in 2021.
Call of Duty: Vanguard and Black Ops: Cold War unsurprisingly took the top two spots, respectively. Madden NFL was the third best-selling game of the year, with Pokemon: Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl and Battlefield 2042 rounding up the top five. Battlefield 2042‘s inclusion in the top five is somewhat surprising, considering it not only released towards the end of the year, but it was also widely panned and reported to have suffered from poor sales and dwindling player base.
PS5 continues to dominate dollar sales
Despite being hard to find, the PS5 and Nintendo Switch were tied for dollar sales leadership during December 2021. In terms of units sold, Switch remains the best-selling console because of its availability, leaving PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to settle for second and third positions, respectively. However, PS5 continues to be one of the best-selling gaming consoles and a market leader, decisively beating Xbox Series X/S worldwide.
In other news, Bobby Kotick reportedly tried selling Activision Blizzard to Facebook first, and is likely to leave the company with bags full of cash once the deal closes.
