Sony PS5 PS4 Cross-Gen Games

Sony Hints at More Cross-Gen Games Beyond 2022

God of War Ragnarok will certainly not be the final game to ever be released from PlayStation Studios, but as things stand right now it will be the final one to be released on PS4. However, Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios head Hermen Hulst says they may still continue to make cross-gen games for PS4 and PS5 beyond the end of 2022.

Sony may not leave the PS4 behind just yet

Sony had previously revealed they planned to phase out PS4 games by FY 2025, which is due to begin at the start of April 2024. The company was expected to begin this process at the start of the next financial year which begins in April 2023. However, it seems like this process may be delayed after Hulst told Axios that they “certainly don’t want to forget the millions of active players on PS4, and we want to ensure there are great games for them as well”.

For now, games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Rise of the Ronin, and Marvel’s Wolverine have only been announced for PS5, but there are plenty of PlayStation Studios games that are yet to be announced, especially in the live-service category. Hulst says Sony is evaluating games “on a case-by-case basis” for whether they will be released on PS4 and PS5 as cross-gen in the future.
