One of the most exciting titles coming to PlayStation 5 is getting PS5 Pro enhancements. Developed by Bungie, the creators of Halo and Destiny, its upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter Marathon will take advantage of Sony’s enhanced console.
What are Marathon’s PS5 Pro enhancements?
According to Marathon’s PlayStation Store page, the game will utilize PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology to bring exceptional quality to both performance and graphics. Specifically, it will render at an internal resolution of 5K before scaling down to a 4K image.
“PS5 Pro Enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) blends 5K internal rendering into a clean, stable 4K image so your Runner’s view stays sharp, even when the action gets hectic,” says the Marathon store page.
Most PS5 Pro Enhanced games use PSSR to upscale from a lower resolution to 4K to ensure game stability while offering decent image quality. In the most rudimentary explanation possible, this seems to be doing the opposite, as it is actually rendering at a higher resolution, then scaling down to 4K.
It isn’t explicitly explained why Bungie decided on this method for enhancing the performance and graphics of Marathon on PS5 Pro. However, looking at the PC requirements, it looks to be properly optimized and not too graphically intensive, so they probably (and hopefully) found success in just downscaling from 5K to 4K without much issue.
Specific frame rate targets and graphic modes for PS5 Pro were not detailed. It’s a shooter, so here’s hoping for at least 60 frames per second.
Earlier this month, Bungie and Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Marathon will launch for PS5 on March 5. Interested players can preorder the shooter now on the PS Store. It costs $39.99 for the Standard Edition and $59.99 for the Deluxe Edition. A DualSense controller based on the game will release alongside the game for $84.99.
