Crystal Dynamics Admits “Bows are Sexy”, Discusses Aspects Cut From Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics had a lot of additional content planned for their Lara Croft reboot, but unfortunately couldn’t squeeze it all in.

In an interview with OPM, brand director Karl Stewart shared a number of ideas they kicked around that didn’t make it past the cutting room floor, not the least of which included a younger female companion.

We added a little girl at one stage. She was going to be a companion, a way to show Lara in a different light. We had a horse, too. It was great for her to move around on, but we soon realized that a horse implied ‘open world’, like, ‘Why can’t I gallop around the whole island?’ So the horse had to go.

Despite these necessary omissions, one inclusion had to stay, namely Lara’s bow. According to Stewart, this long range weapon is all the rage right now so it was an obvious mainstay. “Bows are sexy,” he said flat out. “It’s the in thing right now, from Hunger Games all the way through to Avengers.”
