Sony Doesn’t Want to See the £19.94 20th Anniversary PS4s Being Sold on eBay

In addition to many people in the United States selling their 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4 consoles through eBay, some UK residents who bought the console through the PlayStation ’94 in London this past week (for as cheap as £19.94) have listed their consoles on eBay for £2300 and £1994.

Considering how there’s only 12,300 of these special PS4s being sold worldwide, and no plans to make more, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they’re going up on eBay for a higher price. As Sony UK Managing Director Fergal Gara told Eurogamer though, “That’s not what we want to see happen.”

Gara admitted that it was inevitable some people would sell their limited edition PS4s online, and they tried to prevent it from happening by having potential buyers bring in a piece of PlayStation memorabilia to the store to buy the system for £19.94, while also having them say, “I crashed my Bandicoot!” All these steps were implemented because Sony was “trying to tap into the people who love the brand the most, and put them at an advantage, because they’re the people who keep us in business, who inspire this whole 20 year legacy.”

He finished up by saying the intention of selling the PS4s at £19.94 was to “honor the fans and having it at such a low price to the dedicated here – it’s all but free – but a nice little touch in terms of remembering the launch year.”

The 20th Anniversary PS4 is expected to go on sale in Canada very soon, with UK gamers able to get them online on Monday for £399.
