PSP Review – Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Crisis-Core-FFVII-Head-2

For a handheld title the story is quite epic and an absolutely fantastic experience. The game begins with Zack helping to carry out a mission in Wutai for the Shinra corporation. After the mission is completed, Zack realizes that many people within SOLDIER have turned up missing, and embarks on a mission to find them. Throughout the game, you will discover many new things that shed light on many of the unanswered questions within the original Final Fantasy VII.

Sephiroth has become one of the most popular villains of all time, and in Crisis Core you get to see him in his prime, before he became a villain. As you progress through the game, you see him begin to lose his mind as he discovers his true origins.

Although the style of gameplay has changed, many of the summons from the original Final Fantasy VII are available to use during battle, summoned via the DMV wheel.  Zack is nimble, he attacks, dodges and summons with ease. The realtime combat is satisfying and rewarding. A variety of attacks are available with the trigger buttons to help change up the combat. The controls are a bit unorthodox but work amazingly well after you become accustomed to them.

Graphically this game is a powerhouse on the PlayStation Portable. It is easily one of the most impressive looking titles on the handheld. As usual, the cutscenes look phenomenal and replicate the big console style. Square Enix has done a great job of recreating the Final Fantasy VII universe on the PSP. The revamped graphics will bring back a lot of memories for those that loved the original. It is difficult to keep yourself from wandering around simply to revisit those locations that you have become accustomed to. To keep things fresh there are many new locations that you will visit along the way during your journey.

Whether you are a fan of Final Fantasy titles or just an action/adventure game fan, this is a title worth of owning a PSP for. For fans that have been wondering about the origin stories behind the original Final Fantasy VII title, this is the game for you. It answers many questions about the original game and more. The game shows what can be accomplished when a developer takes the time to put a meaningful story and great graphics together. It is a must own and great addition to any gaming library.
