Japanese Holiday Sales Pt. 3: PSP TKO

Well, that takes care of that. Part three of our four-part series keeping a close eye on the hardware and software sales during the Japanese holiday season confirms PSP’s pure dominance.
For the week of May 2 through May 8, Media Create’s hardware charts ended up looking like this:

PSP: 54,882
3DS: 29,149
PS3: 20,883
Wii: 11,520
DSi LL: 10,519
DSi: 8,708
Xbox 360: 3,419
PS2: 1,696
DS Lite: 289
PSP go: 258

As I’ve mentioned, the first week of May is chock full of holidays in Japan, so this is a critical sales week for game companies. It’s like Christmas Lite.

Continuing recent trends, handhelds took the top spots. The PSP’s next big releases will be Namco Bandai’s anime-based The Reminiscence of Haruhi Suzumiya and the wacky adventure game Akiba’s Trip, in which players must rip the clothes off of vampire-zombies in order to expose them to sunlight and kill them. I. Am. Not. Joking. These are highly anticipated titles, so PSP will definitely be in the top 3 for the whole month of May, if not still sitting in the throne.

Smart money also says the PS3 sees a surge in June, when Yakuza: Of the End hits store shelves. We’ll see just how high it gets.
