Sony Closes in on Microsoft, PS3 Worldwide Shipment Numbers Catch Up to 360

Microsoft and the Xbox 360 have maintained a steady lead over the PlayStation 3 in years past with a larger number of units shipped worldwide due to an 18 month head start. However, based off of new numbers from both companies, it looks like Sony is no longer very far behind.

Quarter 2 of the fiscal 2011 year ended on September 30th, and Sony has reported a total of 3.7 million console sales over this time period. This brings Sony’s grand total up to a whopping 55.5 million units, narrowing the gap between the PS3 and Xbox 360. The total number of units shipped for the Xbox 360 clock in at 57.6 million worldwide according to a report from Microsoft last month.

It looks like Sony’s console is finally gaining the traction it needs to surpass its competitors. With a huge library of exclusives and an incredibly affordable price point, the PS3 is one compelling piece of gaming hardware.

Let’s hope 2012 brings Sony similar success. Judging by the momentum they have going into the holiday season, it looks like they’re on the right track.
