Ted Price of Insomniac: “Cutting Off Characters’ Heads is not Something you See in Other Game Covers”

Back when the Fuse box art was revealed, it didn’t seem to make much sense. The four people who appear on the cover all have the top of their heads cut off and the abundance of orange seemed a little over the top. As it turns out though, the lack of heads for the characters and overall orange-ness was a conscious decision by Insomniac.

Ted Price, CEO of Insomniac Games, told Joystiq why the box art appears as it does:

I’m very clear on what the reaction has been from some of our critics to the cover, but we wanted to pull attention to the Fuse weapons: the Xenotech. That’s why they’re featured prominently.

Fuse is – the game revolves around ‘Fuse,’ storywise and gameplaywise. I think that we wanted to do something that was different. Cutting off characters’ heads is not something you see in other game covers. The standard approach is to have the full character, front and center, right in the middle of the box – and we took some creative risks with that. I think some people have spoken out about the fact that we took a creative risk. Some people liked it, some people didn’t.

Does this explanation help you accept the Fuse box art (below)? Or do you still hope they change it before the game launches in March 2013? Let us know in the comments.
