Bloodborne Frame Rate Targeting 30fps Since It’s “the Best” for Action Games, Claims Producer (Update)

Update:

Sony has reached out to PlayStation LifeStyle to further shed light to the whole situation and has issued the following statement courtesy of Arata Naito, SCE Asia Marketing representative:

There was some miscommunication in that particular Q&A in which the subtle nuance was misunderstood.

Yamagiwa-san would like to clarify that 1080p/30fps is what Bloodborne is going for considering its game designs, but never meant that it’s the best choice for all action games in general.

While we have the actual interview in audio recording, we’ve been refrained to share it further. In it, the exact words as quoted have been mentioned, but due to Yamagiwa’s answers going through a translator — and how difficult it is to translate from Japanese to English — some things might have been missed in translation.

Original Story:

While we already reported that Bloodborne is targeted to run at “only” 30 frames-per-second (fps), it seems we now know why.

In an interview at the GameStart gaming convention last week with Bloodborne Producer Masaaki Yamagiwa, we asked him what the target resolution and frame-rate was for the upcoming action-RPG. Yamagiwa noted that while they “haven’t made an official announcement yet but they will probably go for 30fps since that’s what they found to be the best fps (frames-per-second) to play action games.”

Yamagiwa added that from the beginning, “they weren’t targeting 60fps because it’s not first-person shooting, it’s an action game.”

Stay tuned to our full interview with Yamagiwa running later this week where we quiz him more about Bloodborne.

Do you agree with Yamagiwa or should every studio strive for 60fps for all of its games?
