Report: Minecraft Almost Purchased by EA, Activision Instead of Microsoft

Remember when Microsoft surprised us all by purchasing Mojang, the company behind the hit world-building game Minecraft? Well, it turns out Microsoft wasn’t the only company that wanted to take control of the game.

Apparently, according to interview that Forbes did with Markus “Notch” Persson, the creator of Minecraft, both Activision and EA wanted to purchase Mojang. Persson explained that the talks with Activision eventually “petered out,” and he would not go into details about the talks with EA. He did, however, note that Mojang refused buyers “who did gameplay in a way we didn’t like.”

Eventually, Microsoft’s staggering $2.5 billion offer finally won out, and it officially took control of Mojang at the end of last year. What do you think about the other buyers? Do you think Minecraft would have undergone changes if either EA or Activision had purchased it?
