Final Fantasy XIV DDoS Attacks Could Occur Again But Square Enix Is Deploying Preventative Measures

Final Fantasy XIV‘s North American servers have been a target of intermittent DDoS attacks since mid-June. Until recently, Square Enix had been fighting the attackers all by itself but as they started targeting upper-tier ISPs that are required to connect to the game’s data center, the developer could no longer deal with the situation on its own.

Over on its website, Square Enix has said that with cooperation from upper-tier ISPs, the attacks have been contained, however, it’s quite possible that they’ll occur again. Now, both the developer and ISPs are deploying preventative measures together.

Because we can no longer combat the situation on our own, we have been in contact with the upper-tier ISPs, who have then been taking defensive measures sequentially on their end.

This implementation has already been effective; however, there is the possibility that the attacks could occur again. Therefore, we will seek to strengthen our cooperation with the upper-tier ISPs and continue observing our defenses.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may be causing, and ask for your patience and understanding as we work with the ISPs to provide the maximum defense possible.
