PlayStation Now Cards Officially Removed From Retailers By Sony

Following reports that Sony Interactive Entertainment has begun removing PlayStation Now gift cards from UK store shelves, the company has confirmed to VentureBeat that it’s in the process of pulling the cards globally. It’ll only be a matter of time before they start disappearing from stores around the world.

Why is Sony removing PlayStation Now cards?

According to a company spokesperson, Sony will now focus on its cash denomination gift cards, which can be used to purchase a PlayStation Now subscription.

“Globally, we are moving from PlayStation Now gift cards to focus on our current cash denomination PlayStation gift cards, which can be redeemed for PlayStation Now,” reads a brief and succinct statement. However, this neither confirms nor denies the speculation that Sony is winding up PlayStation Now in favor of the rumored merger of PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus.

Opinion: PlayStation Now, as we know it, seems to be on its way out

Zarmena writes… Sony avoided directly addressing VentureBeat’s report by stating that cash denomination cards can be used to purchase a PlayStation Now subscription. The statement understandably wouldn’t have revealed the company’s plans ahead of time but Sony has previously said that it’s working on a PlayStation version of Xbox Game Pass, so we have reason to believe that Bloomberg’s report of project “Spartacus” isn’t without merit.

In other news, the rumored Twisted Metal reboot has reportedly been handed over to Firesprite, and Star Wars KOTOR remake might replace turn-based combat with God of War-style action.
