Sony Ships 25m PS5s Amid PS5 Pro Rumors

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced today that it has shipped another 3.3 million PS5 consoles in the second quarter of FY2022, bringing the lifetime total to 25 million units shipped. This news comes amid reports of a new model of PS5 as well as PS5 Pro, the dev kits for which are reportedly on their way to developers. Overall, Sony produced over 6.5 million new consoles in the second quarter of 2022, significantly improving stock.

PS5 is still lagging behind PS4 but PS5 Pro could change the game

PS5 is in the lead in the sales race when it comes to current-gen consoles but compared to its own predecessor, it’s still lagging by about four million units at the same point in the lifecycle. With 5.7 million PS5s shipped so far in FY2022, Sony is still well behind its target of selling 18 million units during the year, which it still thinks it can achieve by May 2023, when the financial year ends.

If rumors of PS5 Pro and a revised PS5 with a detachable disc drive are true, Sony may easily meet that target of selling 18 million, but it all depends on when these rumored consoles launch, and at what price. Availability of stock is equally important, of course.
