Cyberpunk 2077 Dreams

This PS1 Cyberpunk 2077 Dreams Recreation Will Hold You Over Until the Official Release Next Year

Bearly Regal, known for the Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding recreations in Media Molecule’s Dreams, is back with another ambitious project. The user just posted a teaser video featuring a pixelated PlayStation 1 version of Cyberpunk 2077 made in Dreams. While the video itself is over 14 minutes long, most of the footage is of the user explaining the ins and outs of the creation.

You can check it out below:

It’s important to note that this is just a work-in-progress, as there is apparently still a lot to do before this creation is complete. The beginning section of the video shows the player walking around in an area reminiscent of the demo shown for Cyberpunk 2077 at E3 2018. Most of the main details are there, like the HUD and objects in the environment, such as bottles, weapons, and other NPCs. There’s even a MIDI version of the soundtrack to round things out.

Towards the end of the video, the user shows what Night City looks like, but again, emphasizes that much work still needs to be done. You can see the player walking around, passing hover cars and buildings, while nearly every major asset pops in, much like you’d expect with an original PlayStation game.

The attention to detail is astounding, and you can even see a side-by-side comparison of the real version with the “demake” to get a sense of how accurate the project is. With the PlayStation 1 in mind, many techniques were used to make the “demake” feel as authentic as possible. From the aforementioned asset pop-ins to having fewer characters on-screen at any given time, this creation definitely looks the part.

One trick used to simulate 3D assets is to make a 2D texture that rotates as you pivot around the object. This gives the illusion that it’s 3D, without maxing out the processing power of your machine. Although Dreams users don’t have to worry about this aspect as much as developers did during the original PlayStation area, the technique is still used when creating these “demakes” to appear more authentic and to save time. It’s much easier to create a 2D pixelated asset than a 3D one. The user is able to take many liberties since the visuals don’t need to look as realistically-rendered as the PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077.

It’s unclear when the “demake” will be complete, but hopefully it’s finished before the actual Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on April 16, 2020. We’ll keep you updated with this creation as Bearly Regal releases more videos.
