Boon: Injustice Will “Offer a Deep, Elaborate Story Experience”

Those hoping to get a bit more out of their fighting games will be pleased to know that NetherRealm Studios is aiming to elevate Injustice: Gods Among Us above other games in the genre by offering a new level of depth with a fully fledged story.

Speaking to the PlayStation Blog, creative director Ed Boon emphasized the fact that the team is working really hard to make a robust story experience for the player, a mode he believes will be able to take advantage of the rich history of these iconic comic book characters.

So we want to continue that tradition and offer a deep, elaborate story experience in Injustice. And with these [DC] characters, who have decades of history behind them, there’s a ton of stuff to draw from. We can’t wait for people to see the Story mode in this game.

In addition to the changes in the game’s story-based mode, NetherRealm is working to make sure the environment plays a pivotal role in every fight, noting that different characters will be able to interact with their surroundings in different ways.

Different characters use the environment in different ways; that will really affect your strategy when facing certain characters on certain backgrounds. Power characters can pick up a car and throw it, while the more agile Gadget characters might use the car as a springboard.

The stage select will be something you care about now, instead of just mashing the X button.

In fact, Boon goes so far as to say that they hope to expand beyond the fighting genre in the future, adding that “If [Injustice] does well, we would like to see our next step be a non-fighting game, maybe something unique in its own right. This is our first step in that direction.”
