First they were £62.99, then they were £59.99, and now they’re £54.99.
After some PS4 games debuted to much higher than expected prices on the PlayStation Store last week, both EA and Ubisoft have lowered the prices of their digital PS4 games to match the Xbox One’s cost of £54.99 (or £39.99 for Just Dance 2014).
Ubisoft then offered up a statement to Eurogamer about why the prices were different in the first place:
Both Microsoft and Sony provide pricing matrices for games sold digitally via their respective services, similar to the way tiered wholesale pricing works on Apple’s iTunes. Developers, including Ubisoft, then select a wholesale price within those tiers that best corresponds to our expectations of the games’ overall value and market potential.
However, the final retail prices are determined by the vendor. Also, because those two matrices are not identical the resulting prices on the two online services don’t always align. We’re aware this is potentially confusing for customers and are looking into what can be done.
If you happened to buy any of those PS4 games while they were at a higher price, Sony has said that you’ll be refunded the difference, while also explaining how those original prices were always subject to change:
Although PS4 launches in Europe on the 29th November, we have switched on the European PSN early to test and make sure that features and functionality are fully operational for launch.
However, as PS4 and PSN have not yet officially launched in this region, nothing on the PSN is final, including pricing on the store. You will continue to see some prices adjusted over the next few days in preparation for launch on Friday.
While the lowered prices are great, keep in mind that you can get the physical versions of the games for cheaper on Amazon.co.uk.
