New Dragon Quest XI Gameplay Shows Off Dragon Riding

New information has surfaced about Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time thanks to a special presentation that aired on Japanese television station NHK. While the special celebrated the influential role-playing game series’ 30th anniversary, it also looked ahead to the future of the franchise. This included a brief segment on the upcoming PlayStation 4 (and 3DS & Switch) title, which is due in 2017.

The clip, which can be seen embedded above, is only two minutes long, but it packed a lot of exciting informaion into such a short time span. The most exciting reveal was a segment that showed the game’s protagonist hopping on a relatively tiny dragon, and flying it around the environment. This is similar to Dragon Quest X‘s flying mounts, although In Search of Departed Time is not an MMO like the previous Dragon Quest offering was.

The flyable dragon wasn’t the only noteworthy information from the broadcast, though. The snippet also revealed that players will be able to camp, where they can become rejuvenated and regain their health and magic. Other abilities while camping includes “mysterious smithing,” being able to pray to the goddess, and patrol the area.

More information on the smithing comes from Gematsu, who have translated the game’s menu when it asks players what they want to create. The following options were available:

  • Copper Sword (Seidou no Tsurugi)
  • Iron Sword (Tetsu no Tsurugi)
  • Silver Rapier (Zan no Rapier)
  • Zombie Killer
  • Platinum Sword
  • Zombie Buster
  • Magic Swordsman Rapier (Makenshi no Rapier)
  • Fire Sword (Honoo no Tsurugi)
  • Metal Slime Sword (Metasura no Tsurugi)
  • Miracle Sword Modified (Kiseki no Tsurugi Kai)
  • Hayabusa Sword Modified (Hayabusa no Tsurugi Kai)
  • Inferno Sword

Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time is currently set to release in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo 3DS, and the Nintendo Switch. A North American release has not been announced yet.
