24th Overwatch Hero “Is Not Who You Think It Is,” Says Game Director

In a recent forum post asking about Sombra’s sitting emote and the 24th hero, Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan offered up this teaser: “24 is not who you think it is.”

People have speculated for some time now that Doomfist would be the next Overwatch hero, and actor Terry Crews even said he’d love to voice the character. Based on Kaplan’s comment though, it looks like Doomfist won’t be the 24th hero.

Elsewhere in the thread, Kaplan said a Sombra sitting emote is planned, but it won’t be out for months. “New heroes will most likely not have sit and laugh emotes for some period of time after their release,” he added. “We’d rather not hold new hero releases for these emotes. But we do plan to add them over time.”

In response to a question asking why emotes take so long, Kaplan said multiple heroes and events are currently being worked on:

Great question. The emotes themselves don’t take months. It’s more on the order of days/weeks. It’s more of a prioritization issue. We have multiple new heroes being worked on right now plus numerous events and event-related content. We’re always asking ourselves ‘what would make the biggest impact for the most people’ when we prioritize. Right now, we feel like introducing a new hero to the line up would be more impactful to the game. Hope that makes sense.

In the recent Activision Blizzard earnings call, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said, “Our plan is to continue evolving Overwatch with new hero and map content, new game modes, and additional events.”

If the 24th hero isn’t Doomfist, who do you think it is?
