Blizzard Explains Overwatch Hero Orisa’s Conception, Says It Wanted an “Alternative” to Reinhardt

Having revealed Overwatch‘s 24th hero, Orisa, Blizzard has shed some light on how it came up with the character. Lead Writer, Michael Chu, revealed during GDC 2017 (via Kotaku) that Orisa “emerged from game design.”

We wanted to have what we called an anchor tank: an alternative to Reinhardt. On the art side, our assistant art director wanted to explore new things. He really wanted to push the boundaries of what an Overwatch hero could look like.

Orisa wasn’t an easy character to work on because of how unconventional she is. In fact, Blizzard found it challenging to “encapsulate her personality.” Enter Efi – a young genius who thought she could build a hero. Chu says the team wanted to perceive the character through Efi’s eyes and that’s how Orisa came into being.

So what if we could perceive Orisa and the world around her through Efi’s eyes and, by association, learn more about the world that way? Orisa as we know her was born. We had this new character learning about her place in the world. She was learning how to be a hero.

What do our readers think of Orisa thus far?
