July 2017 Digital Sales Report: Grand Theft Auto V Reigns Supreme

July’s digital sales numbers are in from SuperData Research, and they’re looking quite good all around for the gaming industry. The market grew 16% year-over-year in July, totaling 7.8 billion dollars. Free-to-play MMOs saw the most growth over the month at 29%, but the mobile and console markets also saw decent growth at 17% and 21% respectively. Premium PC games had a small growth at 8%, while pay-to-play MMOs and Social games declined at 2% and 6% respectively.

Here are the top 10 grossing console games:

  1. Grand Theft Auto V
  2. FIFA 17
  3. Battlefield 1
  4. Call of Duty: Black Ops III
  5. Overwatch
  6. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  7. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
  8. Injustice 2
  9. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered
  10. NBA 2K17

Grand Theft Auto V makes the top of the list this month, with the release of the Gunrunning DLC in June helping to push digital purchases. Multiple Call of Duty titles also make the cut, with Modern Warfare Remastered making it onto the list thanks to a stand-alone release for the PlayStation 4 in late June.

Here’s a bit more from SuperData about console digital sales:

Console leads U.S. digital growth.  July’s year-over-year growth was underpinned by a 20% rise in console digital revenue and an 18% increase in free-to-play MMO revenue.

Grand Theft Auto V stands strong for another month. Through its microtransactions model, GTA Online grew significantly year-over-year for the month of July across console and PC. It did not outperform its record-breaking numbers in June.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered breaks into the console top 10 after having a standalone release on PS4 late in June and releasing late this month on XB1.
