In an internal memo, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman called Uncharted a “new hit movie franchise”, fueling rumors of a movie sequel. The Uncharted movie grossed over $100 million worldwide in just one week after debuting in theaters. The executive also personally expressed interest in a possible sequel in a recent podcast but mentioned that the final decision would be up to Sony.
Uncharted 2 movie could be on its way, and possibly more
The movie starred popular actors Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake and Sully, respectively. Whether it was due to the film’s star-studded cast, crossover marketing, or a mixture of both, the movie ended up making a whopping $51 million in just four days, according to Deadline. The feat is even more impressive when you consider the fact that the movie’s production had been severely affected by the global pandemic. Specifically, Uncharted film director Ruben Fleischer stated that the movie took two years to complete.
Rothman’s internal memo congratulated staff for the movie’s success at the box office, as well as those at PlayStation Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment who helped make the film. Strangely, Rothman also takes a jab at those critical of the future viability of physical theaters. More importantly, though, Rothman dubbed the Uncharted film as the company’s latest hit movie franchise:
It is Presidents Day in America, but we are open in most places around the world today and we have another global triumph to celebrate.
With over $100M in box office worldwide in just one weekend, and a 90% positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Uncharted is a new hit movie franchise for the company
I want to thank all of the filmmakers, the wonderful cast and crew, and especially our friends at PlayStation Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment for their support. And of course, I want to thank each and every one of you for your creativity, dedication and belief.
